In honor of its annual Keyholder Event (details below), The Women’s Fund of Central Ohio asked me to write about the woman who has had the greatest impact in my life, and what women and girls can do to spark change in their community.
I knew immediately that I would write about my mom. But what would I say?!
My mom has had a profound impact on my life− one I didn’t think I could convey in a few paragraphs. So I sat in front of my laptop paralyzed. I had writer’s block.
Then, as I started thinking about all the things my mom has done for me, I realized that −perhaps most importantly− she’s always listened to what I have to say. This might not sound like a big deal, but when your daughter is stubborn, fond of hyperbole, and lacking in the common sense department, listening is…well, it’s gotta be hard sometimes.
I picture my mom like this during some of our phone convos
When I’m confused or frustrated, I tell my mom all about it and somehow she rarely criticizes me or tells me what to do. Mainly, she lets me babble.
Maybe she’s realized what I’ve realized over the years, that people don’t necessarily want advice and they certainly don’t want judgement. Sometimes they just want to be heard.
So I challenge you to find your inner Momma Mac (my nickname for my mom) and patiently listen to your family, friends, and co-workers when they share whatever’s on their mind. Because just being there for someone who needs you can make all the difference in the world.
Lending your ear will be a challenge at times −no doubt− but I promise you’ll never be sorry you did.
